When Do You Need to Register?
Registering on time is one of the most important parts of UAE Corporate Tax.
- If your company was set up in the UAE on or after March 1, 2024, you usually must apply for Corporate Tax registration within three months of when your business was formed.
- Some non-resident businesses may follow slightly different rules.
- If you are an individual running a business, you must register once your yearly Turnover goes above Dh1 million.
It is also good to know that salary, personal investment income, and real estate investment income do not count when adding up this Dh1 million limit.
Important warning: If a business misses its registration deadline, it can receive a penalty of Dh10,000. So it is always safer to register early.
How Much Corporate Tax Do You Pay?
Many people wonder how the tax amount is actually calculated. Here is the simple version.
- If your Taxable Income is Dh375,000 or less, you pay 0% tax.
- Any Taxable Income above Dh375,000 is generally taxed at 9%.
It is important to remember that Taxable Income is not the same thing as your company’s total Revenue. Taxable Income is usually based on your Accounting Income, after making a few adjustments required under the Corporate Tax rules.
When Is the Corporate Tax Return Due?
Most businesses must file their Corporate Tax Return, and pay any tax owed, within nine months after their Tax Period ends.
For example, if a company’s financial year ends on December 31, 2025, then the deadline to file and pay would be September 30, 2026.
All Corporate Tax Returns must be submitted electronically through the Federal Tax Authority’s official EmaraTax platform.
What About Free Zone Companies?
A common myth is that Free Zone companies do not need to worry about UAE Corporate Tax at all. That is not true.
- Being based in a Free Zone does not automatically remove your filing duties.
- A Qualifying Free Zone Person may enjoy a 0% tax rate on Qualifying Income.
- However, Free Zone companies are still generally required to register and submit a Tax Return.
- Any income that does not meet the qualifying conditions will usually be taxed at the normal 9% rate.
What Is Small Business Relief?
Small Business Relief is helpful for smaller companies that want to simplify their tax process.
- It is available to eligible Resident Persons whose Revenue does not go above Dh3 million in the current and previous Tax Periods.
- This relief can be used for eligible Tax Periods ending on or before December 31, 2029.
- Even businesses that claim this relief must still submit a Tax Return. It does not remove the filing requirement completely.
How Long Should You Keep Your Records?
Good record-keeping is a simple habit that protects your business.
Companies should keep all documents that support their Corporate Tax Returns for at least seven years after the end of the relevant Tax Period. This includes:
- Accounting records
- Invoices
- Any other supporting financial information
Keeping these records safe can help your business avoid problems if it is ever reviewed later.
