DXB 70 Million Passengers: A Powerful Growth Story

NEWS DESK
Dubai International Airport continues strong growth toward 70 million passengers this year.

Dubai Airports expects DXB 70 million passengers to travel through Dubai International Airport in 2026. This impressive number shows just how strong travel demand has become across the emirate.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, shared this update during a special media briefing. He also spoke about exciting plans for Al Maktoum International Airport, known as DWC.

Strong Growth Fuels DXB 70 Million Passengers Goal

Griffiths explained that DXB welcomed 31.5 million passengers during just the first half of 2026. This steady rise in travel demand supports the airport’s goal of reaching DXB 70 million passengers by the end of the year.

Monthly passenger numbers have also grown quickly. In June, the airport welcomed 5 million passengers. That number jumped to 6.3 million in July, marking a 26 percent increase in just one month.

Griffiths described this fast recovery as a “trampoline bounce.” He explained that this strong momentum could push passenger numbers even higher than before.

A Fast Rebound in Travel Demand

According to Griffiths, airline capacity has already climbed back to 84 percent of previous levels. Passenger volumes have reached about 78 percent of earlier numbers as well.

He also mentioned that some airlines have not yet fully resumed their operations. However, most of these airlines are expected to return by the start of the upcoming winter season, adding even more momentum to DXB’s recovery.

Big Plans Ahead for 2027

Griffiths confirmed that Dubai Airports expects DXB to reach 100 million passengers annually by the end of 2027. This shows just how quickly demand for travel through Dubai continues to grow.

He explained that Dubai’s economic growth and international connectivity are closely linked. As the city continues expanding, more people are expected to travel through its airports for tourism, trade, and investment.

DWC Development Moves Full Speed Ahead

Alongside DXB’s growth, Griffiths shared major updates about Al Maktoum International Airport. He confirmed that development plans for this new airport are moving “full speed ahead.”

The first major phase of DWC is expected to begin operating in the early 2030s. Once open, this phase alone will offer capacity for 150 million passengers each year.

This is especially important because DXB’s maximum capacity is around 115 million passengers. DWC will allow Dubai to grow well beyond that limit.

How the New Airport Will Be Built

When fully completed, DWC will be able to handle up to 260 million passengers every year. This would make it the largest airport in the world.

Griffiths explained that DWC’s next major milestone will be the opening of a second runway by the end of 2027. The airport will eventually include eight separate sections, called nodes. Each node will support around 32 million passengers, allowing the airport to grow step by step as demand increases.

Once fully developed, DWC will operate with five runways in total. Four runways will be used regularly, while one will remain available as a backup. Two runways will support the airport’s first major phase, with more runways added later as passenger numbers grow.

A Smooth Shift From DXB to DWC

Griffiths explained that the move from DXB to DWC will happen gradually, as new capacity becomes available. He mentioned that the airline flydubai could begin shifting five or six aircraft to DWC as early as next year.

This transition is expected to take place over several months. Eventually, all of DXB’s operations will move to DWC once its first major capacity phase is ready.

Reimagining the Airport Experience

Griffiths also spoke about how DWC could completely transform the passenger experience. He explained that traditional check-in processes could largely disappear.

Instead, technology such as baggage drop-off systems and facial recognition could make travel feel more like walking into a hotel lobby than standing in an airport queue.

Dubai Airports is also exploring ways to connect the new airport more closely with the city’s transport network. Artificial intelligence and other new technologies could further transform how passengers experience air travel in the future.

Final Thoughts on Dubai’s Growing Airports

The goal of reaching DXB 70 million passengers this year highlights just how quickly Dubai’s aviation industry continues to grow. With DWC’s ambitious expansion also moving forward, Dubai is preparing for a future where air travel becomes faster, smarter, and far more convenient.

As both airports continue evolving, Dubai is positioning itself to remain one of the world’s most important global travel hubs for many years to come.
